2016 MALL SHOW RECAP - 5/6/16 - Broadway Mall
Nassau Zone Celebrates National Physical Education and Sports Week at the Annual PE Mall Show

On, Friday, May 6, 2016, the Nassau Zone celebrated Physical Education at its Annual PE Mall Show. This year the Broadway Mall hosted approximately 200 hundred students from five participating schools. As is the custom, school personnel, parents and mall shoppers surround the center circle and schools showcase activities they participate in on a typical day in physical education.
This year, Dianne Dunn of Seaford showcased ball-juggling among other circus acts, Laura Cinelli of East Lake, Massapequa, showcased frisbee juggling among other cooperative games, Leslie Pieters of Roosevelt showcased contemporary lyrical dancing dedicated to a recently deceased classmate along with traditional Latin and African social dances, Dana Fischer of Baldwin showcased a cardio-carnival of dances while Dennis Gorman, John Nessler, Bobby Fehrenbach Jamie San Filippo, Christine Paprocky of Levittown closed out the day with their signature Square dance set!
Becoming a new custom, initiated by Roosevelt Middle School students in PE Mall Show 2014 at the Roosevelt Field Mall, students from Roosevelt and Levittown shared the center circle dancing the Merengue and the Hoedown!
The day was made possible by the relentless keeper-of-the-PEMall show legacy, Levittown's Keith Snynder, the hospitality of Broadway Mall's, Amaka Oweazim, Jade NG of Squairs, Larry Pyser of the American Heart Association, Jamie San Filippo for MCing and Levittown student-teacher, Alec Kornfield.
Usually on the first Friday of May, celebrating National Physical Education and Sports Week, the Nassau Zone annual PE Mall show is moving into its 30-year anniversary of hosting this educational and exciting advocacy exhibition!
About the Mall Show:
The Physical Education Showcase or “Mall Show” sponsored by the Nassau Zone of NYS AHPERD was held on May 6th 2016 last year. This was a great opportunity for schools and students to "show their stuff" to parents and the public.
As in the past we are seeking schools to prepare and perform a favorite 20 minute mini Physical Education lesson. Please encourage friends and family to attend and cheer on your students.

2014 Mall Show Recap

On May 9th six schools from Nassau County participated in various demonstrations of physical education skills and dances under the direction of their respective PE teachers. The purpose of the show was to highlight to the public, quality physical education programs in our schools. The children who participated ranged in ages from 8 to 18 and clearly demonstrated their agility, strength, flexibility, speed, rhythm and coordination.
Master of Ceremonies for the day and event coordinator was Mr. Keith Snyder, Director of Health, Physical Education and Recreation for the Levittown School District. Mr. Larry Pyser, Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart Coordinator, was also on hand to support the cause. Participating in the event were the following schools:
Roosevelt; PE teacher Leslie Pieters – Middle School students performed several ethnic dances during an interpretive story about their culture. Dances included the salsa, meringue, punta, tango and others.
Roslyn; PE teachers Denise Romanello and Andy Marlow – Middle School students performed several line dances to popular country western, rap and pop songs. Their finale was danced to Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean” while they all wore one glove.
Port Washington; PE teacher Fran Clarke – Weber Middle School students demonstrated step aerobics routines and innovative small group step routines to music.
MacArthur; PE teacher Dennis Gorman -HS students performed country western Square Dancing and Reels to the commands of a caller. Line dancing to various popular songs while dressed in boots, plaid shirts, jeans and cowboy hats entertained the audience.
Seaford; PE teachers Diane Dunne and Ken Botti – Seaford Manor Elementary boys and girls demonstrated their circus arts skills to music including: juggling bean bags, balls, rings and clubs. They also showed their expertise with devil sticks and trick sticks while sporting “character counts” Tee shirts.
Levittown; PE teacher Christine Paprocky – Abby Lane Elementary students demonstrated their fitness skills by participating at six innovative stations designed to improved agility, coordination, strength and endurance. Activities included crunches, planks, hoops, ladders and many other exercises to improve cardiovascular health.
The event was a success with parents, friends and others stopping by to watch and take pictures. Many thanks to the Nassau Zone committee members for organizing the event. NYS AAPERD and Nassau Zone are fortunate to have teachers and parents who endorse quality physical education programs in our schools. Also, a very special thank you to Roosevelt Field for hosting it.
For some children this was their first opportunity to perform in public and they all did a fine job. They followed directions, waited patiently for their turn and supported the efforts of their classmates and other participants. Quality Physical Education programs in our schools benefit the health and well being of all children. We appreciate your continued support.

The children who participated ranged in ages from 8 to 18 and clearly demonstrated their agility, strength, flexibility, speed, rhythm and coordination. Baldwin; HS Dance and Drill team performed several assorted dances – Teacher Dana Fisher
Oyster Bay; Elementary children performed a fast paced fitness monopoly game to music – Teacher Jenn Doxce
Roslyn; MS students did assorted activities and several dances to music – Teacher Denise Romanelli
Roosevelt; Lyrical dance with story ending in audience participation in partner dances – Teacher Leslie Pieters
Massapequa East Lake; Rope aerobic routines, steps, hip hop and face paced action to music – Teacher Laura Cinelli
Port Washington; Large group HS step aerobics and innovative small group step routines to music – Teacher Fran Clarke
MacArthur; HS Square dancing and line dancing to various popular songs – Teacher Dennis Gorman
Garden City; Several separate group dances featuring hip hop, jazz, acrobatics, ballet and a male soloist – Teacher Dorothy Burke
Freeport; Atkins School Drill Team performed self created routines and showed how the use of technology can enhance PE classes – Teacher Tim Thom
The event was a success with over 100 people stopping by to watch and take pictures. All of the children who participated received ice cream coupons and prizes from NYS AHPERD and Nassau Zone. Many thanks to the committee members for organizing the event, the teachers, parents and a special thank you to Roosevelt Field for hosting it. For many children this was their first opportunity to perform in public and they all did a fine job.
